A mum has been left disgusted after a shocking discovery with her kids' toy box.

Dawn took to TikTok to share that she decided to clean the contents - which included plastic building blocks - by submerging them in a bath; and the results were so grimy it will make you think twice about how sanitary your kids' toys are.

"An entire cup of coffee"

In the clip, Dawn explained that she decided to put them in the bath after her toddler accidentally spilled her coffee all over the blocks. But she wasn't expecting what happened next.

She wrote over the footage: "POV your toddler spills an entire cup of coffee into their Megablocks bin and now you're stirring them around in your bathtub realising how dirty they actually are."

"At first I was like "ooh, this is pretty" then I went real quick from that to (sick emoji)," she captioned the post.

Viewers were horrified as the mum began to stir the blocks around and the water soon went black from all the dirt they had attracted since she purchased them.

The clip posted to her TikTok account @dawno.saur quickly went viral with over 1 million views and 38k likes.

Dawn was mum-shamed for her discovery

Many commenters suggested easier ways to clean the blocks, such as simply wiping them off, or putting them in a lingerie bag in the wash. Others admitted they regularly cleaned their kids' toys.

One person wrote: "We've had our for four years and now I feel like I have to."

Another commented: "I didn’t need to see this *turns on tub faucet."

A third added: "I know right I just did my grandaughter's toys was shocked."

And there was this suggestion: "This happened to me. Found out they are dishwasher safe!", with another viewer adding, "You can clean them in the dishwasher. I used to do that to clean my son's."

Finally, we loved this one:  "I used to put my kids blocks in a pillowcase then in the washing machine on low or no spin."
