Growing up, my grandparents always told me children should be seen and not heard.
As a kid, I thought it was incredibly cruel to place that expectation on me.
So when a TikTok of a tween girl singing Moana over the intercom during a delayed flight popped up on my For You Page — I remembered how being silenced made me feel.
But the way it unfolded was so surprising, it's become a viral moment.

Little girl sings Moana to plane
The clip, posted by the account druziroaming, has amassed a whopping 17 million views and 83,000 comments.
“When your Delta flight is delayed two hours and you circle Orlando for another two. But the little girl sings Moana on the crew mic and suddenly everything feels okay,” the caption reads positively.
Unfortunately, it wasn't how the clip was received, as many viewers questioned how and why the incident happened.
It’s important to note: the child shouldn’t be at the centre of the backlash.
This is about the adults who made the decision to hand her the intercom phone and then proceed to broadcast and preserve the moment as part of her digital footprint.
Their decision subjected her performance to nasty comments like:
“I’d rather be inside OceanGate."
“This is actually my worst nightmare and personal hell.”
“I’d rather listen to the pilot telling us the plane is going down."
Some viewers questioned the parents, and I think that's a more constructive thing to focus on.
“Major side-eye to her parents. Even if it were a professional singer, I do not want to be subjected to a concert without consent,” one said.
A second added: “The PARENTS should know how to read a room. Not everything should be centred around your child. She isn’t Moana. Life isn’t a Disney movie.”

"We should show grace and understanding"
I definitely don't agree with the harsher comments in the clip's comments section, but I do wonder if the parents made the right call in allowing the situation to happen in the first place.
Because it can't be undone.
This wasn't a parent doing their best to calm an overtired, overstimulated infant whose ears popped on takeoff. In that scenario, we should all show grace and understanding.
This is a tween whose future people failed to consider over a 45 minute span. How did they make a choice to turn an entire plane cabin into a live performance? Because they believed it’s their daughter’s big break?
Well, they were right in part - their child has gone viral - but for all the wrong reasons.
