The Block 2020 studio reveal | Photos

Bathrooms are always divisive on The Block, but Luke and Jasmin’s design decision this week went too far.

Sarah and George win week 11 (The Block)

The Blockheads revealed their studio spaces this week, and I’ve gotta admit, I’m a bit confused. Are they offices or granny flats? Gyms or pool houses? Bedrooms or boardrooms? I don’t have the answers, but to be fair I don’t think the contestants do either.

SARAH AND GEORGE CAME FIRST

The decision to make this space fully contained was a wise one. You either have to give these studios everything, or leave them as a choose-your-own-adventure.

Sarah and George went with the former formula, and it’s amazing. It could be rented out, Grandma could live there, or you could move your never-leaving-home 35-year-old outside in a final attempt to cut the umbilical cord.

On the downside, there’s too much joinery here. A small desk could have been included instead to make way for a sofa zone. As it stands, you have nowhere to watch TV apart from on the bed. I hope Nanna likes to Netflix and chill. The bathroom was delicious though, and overall Sarah and George were worthy winners this week.

JIMMY AND TAM CAME SECOND

After executing the country’s largest kitty litter tray last week, Jimmy and Tam bounced back from their dire garden design with a sublime studio that has the smartest layout of all. Their galley kitchen is genius and allows you to do more with the rest of the small open space. Not making this zone read too ‘office’ or too ‘granny flat’ lets the buyer make up their own mind.

The bathroom looks like something Luke and Jasmin would deliver, but it’s lovely. And the gym downstairs is a timely reminder that everyone in Melbourne needs to put down the lockdown lamingtons and ramp up the cardio, so they get points for that too. Overall a surprisingly successful week for them.

DANIEL AND JADE TIED FOR THIRD

The powder room in the garage was an intelligent move, so Daniel and Jade started the reveal strong. In the studio though, things are a bit lacklustre.

Like Jimmy and Tam, it seems they’re letting buyers decide what they want to use the space for, which is a strategy I’m fully behind. But like with Adam and Elly on The Bachelorette, it’s missing an emotional connection.

Daniel and Jade needed to include a few more wow-factor design moments if they’re going to present the studio this functionally ambiguous. It’s not ticking one box strongly enough. The bathroom was very successful, but not enough to save the rest of the space.

LUKE AND JASMIN TIED FOR THIRD

Luke and Jasmin delivered the most visually stunning studio of the lot, you can’t argue that. The aesthetic they executed here ties into the vibe of their home’s design perfectly. The biggest issue in the space is that there’s too much banquette seating.

That’s the bathroom you can see because there is no door.

If this is a true granny flat for an elderly person, they’d not want to sit there for hours to watch NCIS. The bathroom is delicious in every way possible, but the lack of door is simply unforgivable. Nobody should ever be in a scenario where they’re left to witness the sounds or smells that would billow out of that bathroom. That is not something you want while sipping on your Savvy B.

HARRY AND TASH CAME LAST

Visually there’s nothing wrong with this studio. The palette is lovely, the arched ceiling is gorgeous and the skylights are stunners.

Those skylights are stunning.

It’s the spatial planning that’s a disaster. The kitchen looks larger than Jimmy and Tam’s dining room, and is absolute overkill in terms of size. The bed also has my claustrophobia flaring up; it’s so squashed and suffocated.

Cosy but not in a good way.

Better planning here would have allowed for an ample kitchen, a living zone, a bed and a workspace. In the bathroom things got worse as those hideous pink tiles came back to haunt me one last time. It better be one last time. If I see them used in a pool next week I’m going to be angrier than a Trump supporter post-election.

No more pink tiles, please.
