John Farnham’s sons Rob and James have opened the family photo album to share precious memories with their dad to encourage fans to donate to cancer research.
The Farnham siblings are the ambassadors for the annual Cancer Council Daffodil Day on August 22.
“Our father was diagnosed with cancer two years ago,” Rob said in a social media post over a collage of beautiful family photos.
“The last couple of years have been difficult on our family.
“So it started off as an ulcer inside his mouth and, we found out it was cancer. It was a pretty brutal time for us all.”
James added their father’s survival was due to ground-breaking research into the disease.
“Our Dad wouldn’t be here without cancer research and that’s why days like Daffodil Day are important,” he said.
Rob urged the community to support that crucial research by donating online or finding a flower stall on Thursday.
“This Daffodil Day, for everything that cancer takes, please give.”
The heartwarming carousel of photos featured the revered singer with his sons on the ski fields when they were younger, a family holiday and James and his father in fancy dress and wigs at a party.
There was also a rare image of a beaming John and wife Jill at a function, both wearing flowers in their lapels, and another of Rob standing alongside his proud dad at his wedding to wife Melissa in February.
There was also a shot of their dad singing You’re The Voice with Coldplay’s Chris Martin to open the Sound Relief bushfire benefit concert at the SCG in 2009.
The brothers have stepped up to be the public face of the Farnham family as their father continues his recovery from treatment.
They walked the red carpet at the premiere of the John Farnham: Finding The Voice documentary in May and were also on stage when the film won the Best Factual or Documentary Program at the Logies on Sunday.
Gaynor Wheatley, who helped steer the completion of the film after the death of her husband Glenn, Farnham’s best mate and longtime manager, paid tribute to the brothers’ strength and support over the past two years.
“I know John and Jill would like me to thank Rob and James who have stood in and stood by and stood beside them through an incredibly challenging period of time,” she said.
