Prince William and Princess Kate weigh in on the big scone debate

Prince William and Princess Catherine have weighed in on the age-old scone debate about whether the jam or cream should be spread first. Which is your preference?

We all know how much the Royal Family loves a scone (remember when Buckingham Palace shared Her Majesty The Queen’s favourite fruit scone recipe?) but now for the first time, one of them has officially weighed in on that age-old ‘jam or cream first’ debate.

You know, that argument about whether you should top your scone with jam then cream … or the other way around.

Have your say in our poll below.

How does Prince William like his scones?

When the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived at an NHS tea party at a London hospital recently, they were greeted by former Great British Bake Off presenter Mel Giedroyc, who asked them what they top their scones with … and the nation waited with bated breath.

(Okay so perhaps that’s an exaggeration, but we reckon most Brits edged a millimetre or so closer to their TV sets or took extra loud slurps of their cuppa tea.)

Princess Kate confidently announced: “I do jam and then cream,” but then Prince William casually said: “I go with whatever is closest to me.”

We’re not sure what the Queen, who was a diehard jam-then-cream fan, would say about his relaxed scone-topping etiquette.

The great scone debate

Whether you’re from England or Australia, we’re sure you’ve had the debate at some point in your life.

To help settle things once and for all, taste.com.au put it to its Facebook followers: which is the right way to eat a scone? The response was overwhelming, with more than 18,000 votes in total, where 17,000 said jam first, while only 1000 people said cream.

While it’s safe to say it wasn’t a nailbiting vote, people weren’t afraid to let their opinions be known.

“What kind of psychopath would do the cream first?” questioned one voter.

We even asked our official English foodie-in-the-office Matt Preston to weigh in on the argument and he said: “It’s always jam first in Australia given the lower butterfat content (and the resulting increased instability) of the cream used here compared to the denser clotted cream traditionally used in Devon and Cornwall.”

Australia’s favourite scones

Whether you put jam first or cream first, the most important thing is having a great scone to top in the first place … and taste.com.au has got the recipe for the fluffiest-ever scones.

That’s why it’s Australia’s most-cooked, top-rated scone recipe – with a massive 400 rave reviews.

Using only plain flour, self-raising flour, milk and butter, this recipe will help you achieve the ultimate ‘golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside’ scone moment that all bakers dream of.
