Polly Waffle, Fantales: How to make discontinued Aussie foods at home

Some recipes should never be forgotten so Taste has created homemade versions of 10 discontinued food products — from Polly Waffles to Sizzler cheese toast.

Nestlé announces the end of Fantales after 93-year run

We’ve all had our hearts broken when a favourite Australian food product has been removed from supermarket shelves (er, hello Lattice biscuits) or restaurant outlets when they closed their doors for good (bye bye Sizzler cheese bread).

But don’t worry – taste.com.au’s food experts have made homemade versions of some of them, including Fantales after Nestlé recently announced it was no longer making the iconic chewy caramels.

Get ready to feel like you’re snacking your way through childhood again.

Here are 10 recipes which should never be forgotten.

Giant ‘Polly Waffle’

You don’t need to wait for this iconic Australian chocolate bar to return to the supermarket shelves – just make our enormous version instead.

Lattice biscuits

Arnott’s has discontinued its iconic Lattice biscuits. As we have multiple dessert and slice recipes that feature these crisp bickies with the signature sugary coating, Taste came up with a solution using Sao biscuits.

The original Iced Vovos

It’s often claimed that the original version of the Arnott’s fave had a much fluffier marshmallow top … so we created a tart that really delivers that.

Air fryer Sizzler-style cheese toast

Remember Sizzler cheese bread? This copycat version is cooked in the air fryer so it’s super crispy but tastes just like the original.

Sizzler closed down but you can still have the restaurant's famous cheese bread.

Coffee scroll biscuits

We can’t actually take the credit for this one. This imitation version of the Arnott’s favourite is taken from our sister website, Australia’s Best Recipes.

Ezy sauce

Kraft Heinz announced that it has retired the condiment after almost 80 years of production … and it turns out Australia is lost without it.

Homemade ice-cube tray ‘Fantales’

In June 2023, Nestlé announced Fantales were being discontinued. An Aussie confectionery icon, these chocolate-covered chewy caramels have been replicated in the Taste Test Kitchen.

Honey jumbles

Use everyday ingredients to create these perfectly spiced honey jumble treats.

Hazelnut roll

So this one may not come in roll form, but it’s got the distinct flavour of the vanilla and hazelnut ice-cream that we loved so much.

Caramel popcorn

We think this snack may have even made a comeback recently. Despite its crazy name it was only ever just … caramel popcorn. So we give you: homemade caramel popcorn
