A NSW town has gotten behind a new pie shop with a very “rude” name.
Matthew Reid opened the Phat Phuc bakery in Wauchope, on the state’s Mid-North Coast two weeks ago.
The impressive neon sign that hangs inside the store has gone viral on social media, with many having a chuckle.
“Most of the feedback I have had has been pretty good,” Mr Reid told The Daily Telegraph.
“I’ve just had a couple of older people come in and say, ‘that’s a bit rude isn’t it’ and I say take it in your stride, I don’t care what you think, this is my business, get over it you know.”
Mr Reid said that when he tried to register the business name with the Corporate watchdog, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), it got rejected. But he found a way around it.
“The registered business name is Double P Bakehouse, because the ASIC website had a bit of a cry when I attempted to register Phat Phuc Pie Shop,” he wrote on Facebook.
A post from The Australian Meat Pie Appreciation Society on Facebook with the Phat Phuc sign has over 10,000 likes.
“Classic name, great to see someone having some harmless fun! Bet the pies are great too,” one person wrote.
“Sensational name for a pie shop,” another said.
Mr Reid’s wife is Vietnamese. He said the name has a positive meaning in the South East Asian nation and can be translated to “Happy Buddha”.
