Money-conscious Aussies are flocking to fresh produce markets where shoppers can buy a huge haul of fruits, vegetables, meats, and seafood for under $50.
In NSW, one local raved about the Sydney Markets in Flemington, 15 km west of the CBD, offering produce at a fraction of the cost of traditional supermarkets.
TikTok user @inside_my_mind12 recently visited the markets, often regarded as a “hidden gem”, to see how much she could buy for $50 and was pleasantly surprised.
In her video, she showed off her purchases, including a five kilo tray of grapes for $15, which would typically cost around $40 at Coles or Woolworths.
The best bargain was two kilos of cooked Australian tiger prawns for $25, priced at $14.99 per kilo.
In comparison, tiger prawns currently sell for $26 per kilo at Woolworths and $30 per kilo at Coles.
With her remaining $10, she bought 10 kilos of nectarines, 10 kilos of tomatoes, a watermelon, and a box of cucumbers.
The markets are open from Friday to Sunday, with many locals recommending Sunday as the best day to visit.
Entry is $2 per vehicle, which most agree is a small price to pay for the bargains inside.
Commenters on her video were wowed by her tips and were surprised at how far $50 could stretch.
“This looks amazing!” wrote one viewer, while another commented, “I’m making a trip there immediately.”
“Two kilos of tiger prawns for $25 is insane,” a third user remarked. “What a steal!”
Another viewer shared, “Wow, this is so good. My weekly shop costs me anywhere from $150 to $200, and that doesn’t even include luxury products.”
Some customers confirmed that “it’s worth the hype,” with many claiming they go “every week”.
Viewers from other states asked about similar options in other cities across Australia, and local farmers’ markets were hailed as the best choice.
The Prahran Markets in Melbourne also received high praise, offering a $35 vegetable box full of in-season goodies.
Content creator Steph Boloutis showcased the contents of her box, sold by Pino’s Fine Produce, which included lettuce, cherry tomatoes, celery, pumpkin, eggplant, beetroot, kale, asparagus, bok choy, and oranges, and said the quality seemed great.
On Reddit, someone calculated the value of a Pino’s box compared to major supermarkets and worked out that the equivalent items would cost about $62.77 at Woolworths and $61.90 at Coles.
“We got a box delivered yesterday. The supermarkets are inflexible and market based options are often cheaper and better if you’re prepared to cook what’s in plentiful supply,” one said.
Another agreed, “This is a great option if you’re willing to do a bit of meal prep or freezing as you get a lot of things in bulk.”
“You can also go with a friend or family member and split the box, so you’re only getting as much as you need and there’s no food waste,” another user suggested.
