A restaurantgoer has been left annoyed after just three items cost them close to $50 — but not everyone agrees with their outrage.

The Reddit user took to the forum platform to share a picture of their receipt, blocking out the details of the Melbourne location and where the food was purchased.

However, the social media user confirmed to news.com.au that the image was taken at the airport.

The customer purchased a ham and cheese toasted sandwich for $14.50, adding a slice of tomato that cost an extra $2.50 — which is what the original poster wanted to draw attention to.

They also purchased a medium almond milk latte for $8.50 and a Stone and Wood Pale Ale for $15. Due to the Anzac Day public holiday, there was a surcharge of $6.08.

It brought the bill total to $46.58.

It’s no secret that food prices — whether it be grocery bills or dining out bills — have risen since the Covid-19 pandemic with inflation having a tight grip on the Australian economy.

The Australia Bureau of Statistics revealed in the December 2024 quarter that food prices rose three per cent over the course of 2024. And, while food prices have eased in some areas, produce such as meat and seafood have still risen. This is in part due to the increase in the price of lamb, which rose 17.3 per cent over the year.

Fruit and vegetables, despite falling 3.3 per cent in the three months before December 2024, were still 6.3 per cent more expensive than a year ago.

“Supply continues to improve with prices falling in recent months for tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, mangoes and strawberries due to favourable growing conditions,” the ABS report read.

Some social media users agreed with the person who posted an image of the receipt.

“$2.50 for a slice of tomato lmao get f****d,” one person said.

“$2.50 is f*****g nuts, you can nearly buy a kg if you add a few $$ in at the local vegetable market,” another said.

One person commented: “$17 for a toastie is pretty insane tbh.”

“I’ve seen boujie ones go for that like ruebens and stuff. But a ham, cheese and tomato,” one person said.

Another speculated: “Was it the airport or something? It is a ripoff but they charge like $8 for Tim Tams, so that is kind of expected. Anywhere else…..that is a huge rip off.”

“$2.50 for a slice of tomato? Jesus wept,” one said.

But, some argued it was the customer’s fault for not checking the prices before placing their order.

“Like … I’d be looking at the prices before making an order. That’s all absurd,” one said.

“I mean … I know this is expensive, and $2.50 for a slice of tomato is f****d. but you still f****n paid for it,” another said.

“Robbery in this case meaning you got exactly what you chose to pay for,” one said.

“My rule is that I don’t buy at restaurants what i can’t make myself because f**k $17 for a toastie,” another commented.
