Australians weigh in on what Wendy’s food is really like
Australians have been eager to try items such as the double breaded chicken tenders, Baconmator loaded fries and, of course, the frozen dessert Frosty — but is it worth it?
Wendy’s opened its massive flagship store in Brisbane this week, with lines outside the venue all week.
Australians have been eager to try items such as the double-breaded chicken tenders — a Down Under-specific recipe — Baconmator loaded fries and, of course, the frozen dessert Frosty.
news.com.au spoke to people outside of the venue to find out what they were excited to try. One Townsville mother and her two sons were outside from 5am. All three were keen to try the Frosty.
Another man said he was keen to try the BBQ Baconmator burger, but when told the chain had square burger patties, he was quite stunned.
For the uninitiated, the cheeseburger features two beef patties, six strips of bacon, cheese, mayonnaise, and BBQ sauce on a brioche bun.
One woman said she’d tried Wendy’s in Indonesia and wanted to see how the Australian version compared.
“I don’t know if they have this in Australia, but in Indonesia, they had loaded baked potatoes,” she said.
So, how was it?
All I’d heard about Wendy’s was that the Frosty is a must-try item. However, there is one act that must be done — you must dip your fries in the ice cream/thick shake combo. Literally, every person involved with the business and every social media post I’d seen spoke about the Frosty Dunk.
I’m not one to turn down an odd food combination — and, honestly, when in Rome, right? I have to say I wasn’t exactly sure what the texture of the Frosty would be like. It’s not quite ice cream, but it’s a lot more solid than a thick shake. It comes in two flavours — chocolate and vanilla. I opted for vanilla. I loved it. As my new pals from Townsville said, it was “amazing”.
The fries were also great. I am anti-skinny or crispy fry. The point of a hot chip is to have some potato inside it. There was still skin on the potato. They were pretty good, but I could have done with more salt, but that is personal preference and absolutely me being nit-picky.
I also had the BBQ Baconmator, and the square patties were a fun novelty. I loved how melted the cheese was. I couldn’t give the chicken tenders or the traditional burgers a crack, but fellow diners told me they were absolutely worth it.
However, the standout item for me was the chilli. It’s unlike anything on Aussie fast food menus; it isn’t spicy in the slightest, and the juice served as a fantastic dipping sauce for my chips.
Again, my only fault here would be a bit more of the filling of the chilli. Again, that is just me being picky. I wouldn’t have bought this if it wasn’t for the woman outside who recommended it so, thank you!
I do regret not getting a chance to try the loaded fries out but, alas, there is always next time.
What does the general public think?
TikTok user @hhollyrooneyy gave her review of the items, saying the Frosty was “thick enough for a spoon and smooth enough for a straw”.
“But the real winner of the day was these hand-breaded chicken tenders,” she said.
She said the experience “did not disappoint”.
Another content creator, @foodsack, also gave his opinion on the range. He declared the spicy chicken tenders as “some of the best fast food tenders” people will ever get. The foodie also tried the chilli cheese-loaded fries. “These were pretty good, but I don’t think they need the cheese sauce,” he said.
