Aldi’s major win over luxury ice cream brand competitor

In a former life, comedian Joe Avati was a food scientist who worked on the Magnum ice cream. So a radio host decided to put him to the test.

One of his first jobs was as a food scientist working on the team that brought the Magnum ice cream to Australia, but when put to the challenge of a blind taste test, comedian Joe Avati failed spectacularly.

Host of 2GB’s afternoon slot Deborah Knight challenged the 48-year-old to try three different brands’ versions of the classic Magnum ice cream and guess which was the real deal.

In the challenge were the Streets Magnum, Connoisseur brand and the Aldi version.

In the clip, shared to Instagram, Avati quickly got stuck in, taking a bite of each one.

“Do you need water as a palate cleanser between bites? Like a wine taster,” Knight joked.

Avati agreed he probably should have had water in between bites to be able to better get the taste.

When asked to pick which one he thought was the Magnum, he said he thought it was the first one he tasted.

“Can I tell you, that is incorrect,” Knight said.

“That was the Aldi ice cream. The Aldi advertisers are going to be saying they’ll use this clip because even the Magnum inventor thinks it’s the real thing!”

Aldi’s Monarc Utopia Vanilla ice creams sells in a four-pack for just $4.49, while a four-pack of Magnums sell in other supermarkets for $10.50.

An Instagram account belonging to Aldi jokingly commented on the video: “Well, you can’t argue with science!”

Other social media users were quick to declare their love for the Aldi ice cream.

“Guess what I’m getting tomorrow,” one person commented.

Another said: “Can’t beat Aldi Chocolate paddle pops value for money.”

One added: “The Aldi Utopia is just the best. I buy them every week.”
