A popular supermarket item has just been released with a twist, but the sweet treat features a key ingredient that has people divided.
Woolworths released its Hot Cross Bun mudcake on March 19, combining the two iconic treats into one.
The cake takes the iconic spices and sultanas that hot cross buns are known for, mixes it with mudcake and tops it with spiced white chocolate ganache. It was created by the Woolworths Bakery team.
Food content creators @Nectoriouspapi and Nick Vavitis weighed in on the twist on the original mudcake, of which Woolworths typically sells five every minute.
The review didn’t get off to the best start, with Nick saying sultanas didn’t belong in hot cross buns and picking out every piece of the dried fruit from the cake.
“Cheers with no stupid sultanas,” he said as he took a bite, adding he’d “fight” people who disagreed with him on the sultana front.
Nectro said he loved the ganache, adding he fully expected to hate it but he didn’t mind the cake at all. He said for anyone who loved traditional hot cross buns, they would likely be fans of the cake.
“Even the sultanas work,” he said.
Nectro said it would also go well with a cup of tea or coffee. Meanwhile, Nick had a very noncommittal opinion of it.
“I feel like you’re getting a hot cross bun and a mudcake. I’m not mad, I’m not upset. It is what it is,” Nick said, adding he wished there was more of a cinnamon taste to it.
An image of the cakes, which retail for $7, was also shared to popular Facebook group Addicted to Bargains. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people agreed with Nick about the sultanas.
“OK the raisins on top is vile,” one social media user said.
Another said: “It does taste like hot cross bun which I thought would be hard to imitate in a mud cake.”
“Heat it up just a little absolutely delicious,” one added.
Another social media user wrote: “A hard NO from me.”
“I thought it was very nice,” another said.
One said: “What kind of monster would put sultanas on top.”
“Imagine putting sultanas on one of life’s greatest pleasures. Criminal,” one person chimed in.
Another added: “Wish it was choc chip and no sultanas.”
Ahead of its release, Woolworths cake category manager, Laura McLeod told news.com.au that the brand couldn’t wait for it to arrive.
“Our latest Mudcake innovation, the hot cross bun flavour, combines the warmth and spice of an Easter classic, the traditional hot cross bun, with the iconic caramel mudcake base we know our customers love,” she said.
