New David Beckham documentary series premieres in London

Victoria Beckham has opened up for the first time about the pain she suffered in the wake of husband David’s alleged affair.

Almost 20 years ago it was claimed the English football ace had an affair with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos while he was playing in Spain for Real Madrid.

But in a searingly honest interview, the former Spice Girl revealed how the couple coped with the alleged infidelity in their new four-part documentary on Netflix, titled Beckham.

“It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us. Here’s the thing — we were against each other if I’m being completely honest,” Victoria said as she fought back tears.

“You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other.

“But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either.

“And that’s sad. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare.

“It was an absolute circus and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town right? Unless you’re in it.”

Asked if she “resented” her husband, the former Spice Girl said: “If I’m being totally honest, yes I did. It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life.”

The 49-year-old admitted she “internalised” the trauma in order to support her husband in his career.

“It wasn’t that I felt unheard because I was always mindful of the focus that he needed,” she said.

The docu-series spans David’s life from his childhood through to his latest role as co-owner of US side Inter Miami.

The sports hero also revealed how their marriage was placed under enormous pressure after he was accused of a fling while playing in Spain in 2003.

“Every time that we woke up we felt, you know, there was something else and you know we felt that, we both felt at the time that we were not losing each other but drowning,” David said.

“But ultimately it’s our private life. There were some days I thought, ‘How am I going to go to work? How am I going to go on that training pitch and look as if nothing is wrong?’.

“I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes. How am I going to do this?.”

David also spoke candidly about his mental health struggles, especially after his career was threatened when he was blamed for England’s World Cup 1998 exit, which sparking a lengthy campaign of abuse from fans.

Reflecting on the turbulent period, which he faced at the age of just 23, the athlete confessed he was a “mess” and left unable to eat or sleep, which “broke” him.

“I don’t think I’ve ever talked about it because I can’t,” he said.

“I find it hard to talk about what I went through because it was so extreme. The whole country hated me.

“To walk down the street and see people look at you a certain way, spit at you, abuse you, come up to your face and say some of the things that they said, that’s difficult.”

The couple attended the London premiere of their docu-series on Tuesday local time, alongside their four children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, as well as Brooklyn’s actress wife Nicola Peltz and Romeo’s model girlfriend Mia Regan.

Speaking of their lives as they approach their 25th wedding anniversary next July, Victoria said: “I feel happy now, I feel really content now.”
