SONIA Kruger narrowly avoided a live TV disaster last Sunday on The Voice.
The host of the Channel Nine talent show opened up to news.com.au about the moment she almost had to stop the show when announcing which contestants had been eliminated.
“Last week when I got to the first elimination, two of my cards had stuck together,” the popular presenter said.
“I said, ‘the person going through to the grand finale is ...’ but I couldn’t find the card with the results on it. I was shuffling the cards and I just couldn’t find the one I needed.”
Kruger’s heart started beating rapidly but the seasoned host managed to keep her cool.
“I told myself, ‘just breathe, it’s fine’,” she said.
“The director was yelling at me through my earpiece, ‘read on, read on!’ But I couldn’t read on because I couldn’t find the card. There was an awkwardly long pause and I think people thought it was for dramatic effect, but it wasn’t. It was literally at that point that I thought I might have to stop and say, ‘hold everything. I need clarification’.”
Thankfully the director soon realised what was going on and fed Kruger the results through her earpiece.
The Channel Nine personality, who’s been hosting The Voice since 2015, is crossing her fingers that there won’t be a similar incident during this Sunday’s grand finale.
“At the end of the day Australia’s going to decide the winner and I’ll hopefully deliver it without having an Oscars moment live on The Voice,” Kruger said.
The four remaining contestants will battle it out this weekend with one of them to walk away with a Universal Music Australia recording contract and $100,000 in cash.
Judah Kelly (Team Delta) is the favourite to win ahead of Fasika Ayallew (Team Kelly), Hoseah Partsch (Team George) and Lucy Sugerman (Team Seal).
“Punters can’t get enough of Judah this week and he’ll be hard to beat on Sunday with only Fasika keeping anywhere close to him in the betting,’’ sportsbet.com.au’s Will Byrne said.
And who does Kruger think will win?
“I’m a human being so of course I have a favourite but would I say who it was? No,” she said.
“It’s going to be a really tough one to pick because they’re all really good in their own way.”
Despite the long hours and pressures of live TV, Kruger is sad that this season of The Voice is about to come to an end, saying, “I’m definitely gonna miss it”.
In particular she’s going to miss Kelly Rowland whose son Titan has had several play dates with Kruger’s daughter, Maggie.
“We’ve taken the kids to the movies and we’ve taken them to things like little athletics classes,” Kruger said.
“They’ve been hanging out together a lot ... We’re really going to miss them so I think we’ll have to go and visit them at some stage in LA.”
The grand finale of The Voice airs this Sunday at 7PM on Channel Nine with live performances from Katy Perry, Niall Horan and Noah Cyrus.
