The Voice has crowned a winner for the show’s 12th season, taking home $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia.
And the winner is... Tarryn Stokes, from Team Rita.
Tarryn, 40, emerged victorious from a final four that also included Charlie Pittman, 28, from Team Guy; Ethan Beckton, 19, from Team Jason; and Ezra Williams, 28, from Team Jess.
The top four each performed twice during the grand finale: Once in a duet with their coach, and again solo.
Tarryn and her coach Rita Ora duetted on the Tina Turner classic The Best, before she returned for her solo performance: A sky-high rendition of the Eric Carmen song All By Myself (although hers was heavily indebted to Celine Dion’s definitive version of the song). It was easily the night’s standout performance, making her a worthy winner.
Ezra opened the show with a performance of the Camilla Cabello song Don’t Go Yet, returning to the stage later on for her duet with coach Jess Mauboy. The pair were in perfect voice as they performed a stripped back, ballad version of the Harry Styles hit As It Was.
Then it was Ethan’s turn to duet with his coach Jason DeRulo, the duo performing a stirring rendition of the Lewis Capaldi ballad Someone You Loved. Ethan returned later to perform his solo song: Ed Sheeran’s Eyes Closed.
Charlie was up next, with a rocky performance of the Shawn Mendes song When You’re Gone, before he and coach Guy Sebastian turned out a surprising tropical-pop version of the Natalie Imbruglia classic Torn.
While The Voice winner receives a $100,000 prize and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia, in this, there is no guarantee of actual chart success: Music from last year’s winner, Lachie Gill, missed the charts completely. The last time a Voice winner scored a top 20 hit was back in 2017, when Judah Kelly’s winner’s single peaked at 19 on the charts. Two years later, season 8 winner Diana Rouvas made headlines when her winner’s single, released immediately after the show’s finale, failed to crack the ARIA top 500.
Tarryn’s coach Rita Ora was full of praise for the mum-of-three, saying: “Tarryn’s sacrificed time with her kids to make her dream come true. She is undoubtably one of the best singers I’ve seen on a show like this.”
Tarryn shared: “I want people to know that they can still pursue their dreams as parents.”
