Sonia Kruger reveals she’s keen to host US Dancing with the Stars now The Voice has wrapped

AUSSIE TV darling Sonia Kruger has put her hand up to host America’s Dancing with the Stars now that her hosting gig on The Voice has wrapped up.

EXCLUSIVE

SONIA Kruger has named The Voice Australia as the “pinnacle of Australian television” but now the sixth season has wrapped, the Today Extra host has her sights set offshore.

“I’d love to work internationally,” Kruger told News Corp.

“I’ve been lucky to work on three big international franchise programs: Dancing with the Stars, Big Brother and The Voice but I’d love to host US Dancing with the Stars.”

A move overseas would mean some tricky family-life decisions for Kruger who is mother to two-year-old Maggie with her partner, Seven News boss Craig McPherson.

And a tough battle with veteran US TV personality Tom Bergeron — who has helmed Dancing with the Stars since its inaugural 2005 season.

However, since hitting her peak on “the best show on Australian television”, Kruger is scrambling for another mountain to climb on home soil.

“I’ve hosted all these shows, and they’re great shows and they’re great productions but this show (The Voice) is without a doubt, it’s the pinnacle,” said Kruger.

“The look of it, the international aspect with the coaches, it truly is a quality production … I don’t know what to do after that.”

Dancing was always Kruger’s first love. Growing up in regional Queensland, she recalls hours-on-end watching black-and-white Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire films with her mother, a seamstress.

“I was a nerdy bookworm kid, into ballroom dancing. I mean, it doesn’t get much nerdier than that,” said Kruger, 51.

“I remember the first dancing competition I ever went in. I was nine. I had a red-fringed, sequined dress on and I just thought it was the best thing ever — it was just so much fun,” she said.

After working on numerous stage shows, her dancing prowess landed Kruger a now infamous gig as Tina Sparkle in Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom.

However, fear of “living on the poverty line” as a gigging dancer saw her turn her attentions to TV presenting.

It’s yet to be seen whether Kruger will land the US gig, but she is no doubt looking forward to a more relaxed pace now she no longer has to juggle the late nights of The Voice with the early mornings of Today Extra.

The Voice days are the longest. Today extra is good because it’s a half a day and I get the afternoon with Maggie — which is more than most working mother’s get,” said Kruger.
