‘Destroyed’: Chaos as Block star’s wife disappears

There were unprecedented scenes on The Block when one contestant abandoned the show after a brutal bust-up with her husband.

The Block contestant abandons the production and goes home

There were unprecedented scenes during Monday’s episode of The Block when one of this season’s contestants abandoned the production and seemingly flew home to Cairns, after busting her husband flirting with a fellow contestant.

Kylie Baker’s abrupt departure from the show left her husband Brad to face the cameras alone, admitting he thinks their marriage is “done” due to his actions.

The controversy began late on a Saturday night on The Block, in scenes that only partly played out on camera: South Australian contestant Mimi, competing on the show with her husband Kristian, visited Brad and Kylie’s house armed with a bottle of wine.

She and Brad shared a drink and a chat while Kylie lay nearby, napping.

By Brad’s own admission, what happened next saw him cross a clear line.

“I said some pretty inappropriate comments. I was flirting with Mimi … Kylie overheard them, and understandably she’s quite upset,” he later explained to producers.

Kylie explained that what she heard had made her feel “very unhappy” and down about herself.

She vented about the situation in an emotional phone call to her mother while driving.

“What, he’s bitching about you to other people? Well, that’s happened before and it’ll continue to happen,” her mum told her.

“Plus flirting, plus talking really inapproriately. How many f**king chances have I given him? Time after time,” said Kylie, giving her mother an example of the “flirty” comments she’d heard Brad say to Mimi: “Oh, you know I’d follow your OnlyFans.”

“I actually feel disgusted. How little I mean to him is … really sad,” she said.

And so Kylie decided to leave the show, in very dramatic circumstances. Later on in the episode, host Scott Cam updated some of the other contestants on the situation: Kylie had left the building site that morning to attend a flooring consultation, “and she’s never been seen since. We found her car, Block phone, all the hi-vis … we’ve done everything we can to locate her and she has not been seen,” he said.

Vision from Kylie’s in-car camera showed that at 2:34pm that day, she’d abandoned the vehicle and taken nothing but her handbag with her.

Two hours later, Brad arrived at the same car park in search of his wife and found her abandoned car.

He spotted one detail that suggested his wife was on her way back home to Cairns to see their four young children: She’d taken her nail scissors out of her handbag and left them on the front seat “because they won’t let you take them as carry-on.”

Sat in the gutter, he opened his wife’s Block-issued phone to find a video message she’d recorded for the show’s production team to explain her departure.

“Alright, so I’m saying goodbye. I can’t be on national television having my marriage breaking down. So I’m going home, and I can’t say I’ll be returning,” she announced.

“You can talk to Brad about the details, but unfortunately I can’t do it anymore. Thank you for the opportunity and I’m sorry I can’t stay until the end, I’m just not strong enough anymore.”

Back on The Block, Brad appeared despondent as he told the producers he suspected Kylie had quit not just the show, but their marriage too.

“I’m embarrassed, and I feel sorry for other people having to live with my choices. She’s the last person I want to hurt – her or my kids or my family. But I managed to do it anyways. There’s no way this is going to go away or get better. It’s done,” he said.

Asked if he thought Kylie had left him for good, Brad said: “I’d say so. I’d very much say that I’ve just single-handedly destroyed my family.”

Mimi will share her side of the story in Tuesday’s episode, but was shown on camera insisting to husband Kristian that she and Brad were “just talking” on the night in question.

Kylie’s departure is yet another dramatic walk-out in what’s been a very turbulent season of The Block, with WA couple Jesse and Paige quitting the show five weeks in after escalating tensions between them.

The engaged twenty-something couple told their fellow contestants as they left that they needed to put their relationship first, but recently came a sad update: They’ve now called off their wedding.
