Audiences might be overwhelmed with a sense of deja vu once the next season of The Crown is released.

Actor Ed McVey has been spotted on set for the first time, portraying an early-20s Prince William, and the resemblance is uncanny.

On the central London set, McVey was costumed in a WASP-y uniform of beige chinos, blue blazer and black shoes, and carrying a khaki backpack.

In September, the actor was cast as the famous royal in the hit series, which will tell the story of William during his young adult years when he first met Kate Middleton at St Andrews University. Middleton will be played by Meg Bellamy.

McVey is expected to be last person to portray William on The Crown, following a string of younger actors.

In the recently released fifth season, Timothee Sambor and Senan West (son of Dominic West, who is portraying Prince Charles) played William while Rufus Kampa will take on the role as teenage William in season six.

In the fourth season, Elliott and Jasper Hughes played him as a baby while Lucas Barber-Grant was toddler William.

The sixth season will be the final instalment of Netflix’s high-end royal drama. It tracks the story of the British royal family from the time of then-Princess Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.

The final season is expected to run from the death of Diana and end in the early 2000s, initially with the deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother. But a report suggested the sixth season could go as late as 2005, culminating with the wedding of Charles and Camilla.

The Peter Morgan-created series premiered in 2016, immediately impressing with its lavish production values and superb performances. It’s been nominated for a slew of awards, including 23 Emmys, winning Best Drama Series in 2021.

But it’s not been without its detractors, particularly royalists who argue the series has been insensitive to the real-life Windsors with its fictionalised drama.

The fifth and sixth seasons star Imelda Staunton as the Queen, West as Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, Jonathan Pryce as Philip, Lesley Manville as Margaret and Olivia Williams as Camilla.
