Outlander fans, the wait is almost over.

After an agonising two years since the season 5 finale, the cult romantic drama is finally returning with its sixth season on Foxtel on March 7, 2022.

The first episode, which runs for 90 minutes, will pick up where season five left off, after Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) escapes a violent encounter with Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and flees back to Fraser’s Ridge.

The sixth season of the time-travelling show – which has become renowned for its epic sex scenes – will follow Diana Gabaldon’s sixth Outlander novel, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and will feature eight episodes.

According to an official synopsis: “Claire and husband Jamie MacKenzie Fraser (Sam Heughan) now strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution. They must defend their home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care. For the Frasers and their immediate family, “home” is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives.”

Australian actor David Berry, 37, came on-board from season 3 as Lord John Grey, and previously told news.com.au he was taken off guard by the extreme popularity of the show.

“I really just came in blind, and then the fandom hit me after that,” Berry said.

“And it did hit me like a brick wall. Like a tidal wave. It’s a very big, passionate and encompassing fan base. People are really invested in this show.

“The first time I got an inkling of how immense this fandom was [was] when the casting notice went out and minutes later my Instagram was blowing up with new followers.

“It was definitely intimidating knowing so many people would be invested in my performance, and when you get a role you honestly feel this huge sense of impostor syndrome.”

Outlander season 6 premieres March 7 at 7pm on Foxtel On Demand, with new episodes dropping weekly
