MARTIN Garrix is the world’s No. 1 DJ but he had no idea what to expect when he agreed to play an opening set for his good mate Justin Bieber on his Australian stadium tour.
“I can’t remember the last time I was a support act. Justin is a good friend; he has a lot of younger fans and I was expecting they might just stand there looking at me but as soon as I played the first song, it was crazy, ridiculous,” he said ahead of the Sydney concert on Wednesday night.

Riding high in the charts with his latest hit, Scared Of Being Lonely with Dua Lipa, the 20-year-old electronic producer didn’t expect to get as mobbed by fans as he has been during the tour.
One greeted him sporting a tattoo of the DJ’s logo on his arm. And he spent half an hour in a Sydney clothes store during a shopping expedition posing for selfies with fans.
Garrix appreciates their fandom but sympathasises with Bieber’s frustrations with overeager fans who shadow his every move to score a social media moment instead of having a conversation.
“Justin is on a whole other level. It is crazy; I don’t get how he does it. I’ve been with him and seen how crazy it is, also all the paparazzi stuff and it’s times 100,” Garrix said.
“The thing is people only care about their selfie. I am a fan of artists and if I have 30 seconds with an artist, I am not going to take a photograph just to prove on social media that I was with the artist.
“I am going to enjoy every single second of those 30 seconds, ask questions, talk, actually make something of the moment, thank them.
“That’s what Justin means and what Justin gets tired of. Sometimes I am at a restaurant and they just come and stand beside me and take a photo and they don’t even talk to me. Really? Why did you just do that?
“In the end, the fans are the reasons why we are doing it. It’s all about balance.”
Garrix, who also hit the pop charts with In The Name Of Love with Bebe Rexha, again found out how much his fans love his work this week when they started a petition calling for the official release of their collaboration Rewind Repeat It.
While there are live versions of the track online as Garrix has played it during their DJ sets over the past two years, it has reportedly been shelved for release because of a disagreement between the two artists’ respective record labels.
Garrix fears it will never see the light of day.
“Yeah I heard about the petition. It’s one of the songs the fans are superkeen to hear in high quality and I’m afraid it won’t happen,” he said.
“There’s so many other exciting projects I am working on besides Martin Garrix. There’s an anonymous project.”
Garrix hopes to return to Australia next year for his own headlining tour. as well as continue collaborating with other artists on new singles.
