IN news that will shock precisely no-one, Britney Spears’ manager has confirmed she routinely mimes on stage.
In part of a longer article about celebrity Las Vegas residencies published on Medium.com, Spears’ longtime manager Adam Leber was quoted admitting the singer frequently mimes during her Piece Of Me show at the Planet Hollywood Resort.
“To put on the show that she puts on, it’s virtually impossible to sing the entire time and do what she does,” Leber says.
“She’s singing on every song, basically, when she has the ability to sing. There’s no way you can dance for 90 minutes straight and sing the entire time.”
If you ask us, Leber might be downplaying just how much his charge actually mimes — remember this notorious footage from a 2001 Spears concert, with the (godawful) sound allegedly coming straight from Spears’ microphone to the concert’s control panel?
Compare that to how Spears ‘sings’ the ballad Everytime in her Vegas shows — note-perfect from start to finish. Every intonation, every single vocal inflection, exactly the same as the original, 11-year-old recording.
While we don’t begrudge pop stars relying on the occasional prerecorded vocal during their more intense dance routines live, it’s hard to ignore that Spears seems to mime even her most sedate ballads in their entirety.
If Britney’s “singing on every song,” as Leber insists ... is her microphone switched on?
