Adele nails opening Australian concert in Perth

ADELE has told fans of how her son was hurt during rehearsals for her Australian tour, which forced her to ditch part of her show.

Adele touches down in Sydney

ONLY Adele could get away with a victory lap of the stage on her very first song.

Just a few weeks after she won hearts all over the world with that singing malfunction, and all those trophies, at the Grammys, the world’s biggest pop star nailed her opening Australian concert in front of 65,000 people in Perth.

That voice, the one more than 20 million people have fallen in love with on her third record 25, somehow transcended the typically fraught stadium sound curse to ring out loud and true.

The endearing superstar confessed her nerves and a technical glitch did in fact shadow her opening moments.

She revealed she couldn’t hear anything for the opening seconds of her entrance song Hello and her sound tech had to fix the problem on the run.

While the 28-year-old performer manages to bridge the distance in such a cavernous space with the sheer force of her talent and her down-to-earth charm, it is impossible to be all things to everyone in a stadium.

There are moments when video packages replace the live action on the screen while she is standing mid-stage in all her maroon sequined gown glory and you wonder if those in the nosebleed seats can even see her.

That’s always the problem with the big gigs.

But Adele gets you, she sucks you in as she warns you she is going to have more than a few chats during the night and then sends goosebumps prickling all over your body with a note perfect Skyfall.

Australia is the first country to witness Adele in this massive in-the-round configuration and she put in hours of rehearsal before the opening concert.

“Yeah, very secretive except for the f***ing helicopters,” she joked.

She shared that fireworks were cancelled when “a bit of s**t” went in her son Angelo’s eye when they did a test run.

Within an hour of her first Aussie gig, she was immersed in all things bug-like and freaked that she had “a cockroach on the stage and a fly in my tea”.

A sip of bug-free lubrication and she lets loose with the epic Don’t You Remember, injecting it with such emotional honesty you marvel at how a human can make such a beautiful noise.

But wait, there’s more. Bob Dylan must will her his song Make You Feel My Love because she owns it, no one could ever imbue it with as much meaning, as much truth.

She does the same but with the requisite sass on Send My Love (To Your New Lover) as she makes another round of her circular stage.

Even as she sashays relatively slowly, you have to feel for a pop star suffering for her costume art, the Australian summer and the weight of all those sequins and layers keeping her as hot and sweaty as her singing exertions.

“The weight is going to fall off of me on this tour. The sweat is dripping down my thighs,” she shared.

Her sense of humour reached peak Adele when she chose to bring a drag queen impersonator Feminem onstage for a hug, a spot of singing and a selfie.

Adele made her Bond girl audition with a T-shirt gun which fired the tour souvenirs into crowd with $20 attached to “buy a drink on me.”

She has self-deprecatingly referred to herself as a belter but that implies a singer with all bluster and no heart.

Her show has so, so much heart. Her joy at seeing the effect her talents have on audience members young and old is pure and infectious. Her delight singing the song that started it all, Chasing Pavements, is palpable.

For maximum Adele enjoyment, heed the traffic warnings and get to your venue early.

Grab a drink and settle in for a most enjoyable evening with a superstar who wants to show a bit more of the human.
