IT’S the stirring power ballad that has captivated Eurovision, and it was written and recorded in just several days.

Australia’s hopeful at the long-running song contest Dami Im said Sound Of Silence was the only song ever considered.

Written by Sydney songwriting team DNA, comprising Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci, the emotive tune came together at breakneck speed, Im revealed.

“We didn’t have all that much time to do it,” she said.

“I asked them to write something for me and then I heard it — just once — and thought, wow, this is amazing. It was perfect and so that was that. I was lucky we found it quickly.”

Im hit the studio and then recorded a video, before going into final preparations for her stage performance in Stockholm, Sweden.

She gave DNA a brief on the kind of song she really wanted, but left them mostly to their own devices.

There was a small part of her hoping for the kind of cheesy disco tune Eurovision is famous for.

“In the end, they knew I love singing ballads and they know I can hit the big notes, so that’s what we wanted to show off,” she said.

“They know me quite well — they know my story and how tough it is being away from my husband Noah all the time, travelling and sitting in hotel rooms, which is what the song is about.”

Sound Of Silence gives some insight into the lonely nature of Im’s pursuit of fame, which often takes her away from the couple’s home in southeast Queensland.

She’s relishing the chance to inject a bit of sorrow and power into the performance, she said.

“In Australia, people mostly prefer up-tempo songs, I think. I don’t get to perform as many ballads as I’d like. At Eurovision, you can do these kinds of big songs ... so why not?”

DNA are responsible for penning hit songs for the likes of Delta Goodrem, The Veronicas, Jessica Mauboy and Samantha Jade.

Now in its 61st year, the Eurovision Song Contest is the oldest annual televised competition in the world.

It’s the second time Australia has been permitted to commit, with pop star Guy Sebastian coming fifth in the 2015 final.
