Aussie singer The Kid LAROI performed an impromptu gig for fans at a hotel lobby in Kuala Lumpur, after the Malaysian government cancelled the festival he was due to headline.

The Sydney-born musician was due to play at the Good Vibes Festival this past Saturday, but the event was unexpectedly called off the night prior after 1975 rocker Matty Healy criticised the government’s anti-LGBTQ laws, then kissed his male bandmate on stage.

Laroi – real name Charlton Howard – was not aware of the controversy as he was en route to Malaysian at the time. The 19-year-old was only updated after he landed in the country.

“Touched down & found out the festival is cancelled… I love you Malaysia, I’m sorry,” he wrote on an Instagram Story.

However, rather than let fans down, Laroi decided to perform a mini-set for them at a hotel lobby, belting out his hits including Thousand Miles, Stay, Without You and Diva.

“Two things, before I start. I’m very drunk, number one. Ever since they cancelled the show, I had no other option but to go right to the bar. So here I am,” he told the crowd, as per Billboard.

“I’m with my friends today, and I just figured since everything got cancelled and I’m here anyway, I may as well come and do a couple songs. Thanks to the hotel for letting me do this,” he added as the crowd erupted in applause.

The Good Vibes Festival was suddenly cancelled on Saturday night in the middle of 1975’s set after frontman Healy blasted the government for their LGBTQ stance as he kissed his bassist, Ross MacDonald.

“I do not see the point of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” Healy said onstage prior to the kiss.

“I am sorry if that offends you and you’re religious and it’s part of your f***ing government, but your government are a bunch of f***ing retards and I don’t care anymore.”

Later that evening, after performing just seven songs, Healy announced to the crowd that they were banned from the country and had to leave the stage immediately.

The very next day, Malaysia’s communications minister announced the rest of the festival was cancelled.
