Kylie Minogue tears up as she wows in Perth on the debut night of her world tour

Kylie Minogue became visibly emotional as she commanded the stage while opening up about her career over the last four decades.

She’s arguably Australia’s most recognisable export, and not only that, but our most beloved. Kylie has been one of the biggest names in the music industry for more than three decades, and the Tension Tour is her first chance in over half a decade to show audiences across the world just why she has remained a permanent fixture not only in the charts, but in our hearts.

Kylie’s strength lies in her power to appeal to practically any demographic.

Whether it be the OG fans from the 80s, the now 30-somethings that came aboard when Spinning Around hit the charts, or TikTok users who didn’t know who she was until Padam Padam began trending around the globe.

One of the benefits of seeing a superstar like Kylie onstage is how safe she immediately makes the audience feel as a performer. This is a woman who’s dedicated her life to the craft of being a pop star, and she does it in a way few other women have ever managed, but more importantly, you can see just how much she still lives for it.

Every detail of the show felt well thought out and tailor made to appeal to all facets of her fanbase. From opening with new hit Lights Camera Action to closing with crowd pleaser Love at First Sight, Kylie had the entire RAC arena wrapped around her finger as she took us on a journey through her illustrious career.

Much like her fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman, Kylie’s work ethic is incredible. She never seems to be out the studio. Since her last tour down under in 2019, she’s powered her way through three new albums and scored one of the biggest hits of her career in America. The Tension Tour gives her the chance to showcase the best of these albums, and Kylie practically glows onstage as she revels in finally getting to perform tracks like Say Something and Tension for an audience of diehard fans.

During one heartfelt segment, Kylie took a moment to open up about how creating music during the pandemic and seeing the impact it had around the world helped fuel her desire to keep creating in the studio.

One of the most memorable moments of the show sees Kylie walk through the crowd to the B-stage where she performs a handful of acoustic versions of deep-cuts from her career.

As she began singing her wildly underrated track Breathe from a time when perhaps the world didn’t appreciate what a talent she was, it felt as though there was a rare moment of nervousness from an otherwise tour de force of a pop star. And it was then that I realised … Kylie really needs to take a look in the mirror and remind herself of what an icon she is, and how beloved her discography is, especially to the LGBTQ+ community who will be there until the very end. Padaming with her.

While not everyone would have known the words to Breathe – a slice of dark, sexy pop that walked so Slow could run – those of us in the crowd who did know the words appreciated it more than you can know. Now do us a favour and give Did It Again the love it deserves at a future show. And in the meantime, here’s to another 30 years of bangers.

Make sure to grab one of the final tickets from frontiertouring.com/kylie before they’re sold out and you miss the chance to see Kylie doing what she does best: putting on a hell of a show.
