Dark Mofo line up 2018 announced

TASMANIA’S cutting-edge festival Dark Mofo has delivered its 2018 line-up, with critically acclaimed US performers Laurie Anderson and St Vincent among the powerhouse of headliners.

And New Art, features a powerhouse of headliners, including critically acclaimed US performers Laurie Anderson and St Vincent.

Dark Mofo’s creative director Leigh Carmichael said: “We’ve pulled together our most expansive lineup yet … presenting more than 750 artists, 22 exhibitions, two opera companies, two theatre companies, one puppet theatre company, one orchestra, and a community choir.

“It’s always difficult to know exactly how the festival will unfold for the audience. We just strive to try and find new ways to experience the darkness, and hope that people will continue to embrace it, and enjoy Hobart’s longest nights.”

“All The Things I Lost In the Flood” Laurie Anderson

New York artist, musician, multimedia performer, filmmaker, writer, and maverick, Anderson celebrates language and stories through live music, video, spoken word and electronics. June 13, Odeon Theatre, Hobart.

“Chalkroom” Laurie Anderson and Hsin-Chien Huang

A collaboration in virtual reality between Laurie Anderson and Taiwanese new media artist Hsin-Chien Huang this show was awarded “Best VR Experience” at the 74th Venice Film Festival (2017). June 14-17, June 20-24. Venue TBA.

“Drones” Lou Reed

Immerse in the sound bath created by the late Lou Reed’s guitars and amps, arranged by his wodow Laurie Anderson and Reed’s friend and former guitar tech Stewart Hurwood. As 24 strings are activated by magnetic cones, they unleash cascading and colliding waves of feedback. June 14-17, June 20-24. Venue TBA.

Bang Bang Bar

Dark Mofo’s Lynchian tribute venue, hosting intimate shows. Guest artists include Marlon Williams, Blixa Bargeld, and Laura Jean. June 14-16, June 20-23. Murray St, Hobart.

“Crossroads” Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto

This Berlin-based duo present a silent film of their world travels set to a dark, acoustic neofolk live score. June 14, Odeon Theatre, Hobart.

“Dancing With My Spirit” Archie Roach and Tiddas

Celebrated indigenous artists Archie Roach and Tiddas perform songs from Archie’s lost album, Dancing With My Spirit. The album was only recently unearthed. June 15, Odeon Theatre, Hobart.

St Vincent

The Grammy Award-winning songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and David Byrne collaborator performs songs from her latest, album Masseduction (2017). June 15, MAC2, Hunter St, Hobart.

The chanteuse, songwriter and David Lynch collaborator, who featured in his works Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive, takes up residence at Bang Bang Bar during Night Mass, a multi-venue late night party precinct. June 15 and 16, June 22 and 23.

“Lament” Einsturzende Neubauten

A blistering requiem for the outbreak of World War I, written 100 years after its beginning, and performed live 100 years after its end. June 16 and 17. Odeon Theatre, Hobart.

Other dark delights include Japanese sound artist Ryoji Ikeda’s xenon searchlight work, titled Spectra, popular art space Dark Park, foodie favourite Winter Feast, and the nude solstice swim.

Since its first outing in 2013, Dark Mofo has grown into a FOMO-inducing event, especially for those on the mainland. It has had 400,000 attendances, with 80,000 tickets sold for events last year.
