Bluey feature film to hit screens in 2027

In a fantastic piece of news for parents and kids around the world, Disney and the BBC have announced a major milestone for Australia’s biggest cultural export.

The animated TV show Bluey is set to make its big screen debut in 2027, with Disney releasing key details of what to expect on Wednesday.

So far details on the plot are vague. The show’s creator Joe Brumm confirmed a script had been written, but Disney has kept details limited, confirming only that it “will continue the adventures of Bluey, a loveable, inexhaustible blue heeler dog who lives with her mum, dad and her little sister, Bingo”.

We also know that Brumm will be leading the movie’s production in collaboration with BBC studios.

Acquired by Disney in 2019, Bluey follows the life of the Heelers, a family of cattle dogs residing in suburban Brisbane.

Since its launch on the ABC in 2018, the show has exploded in popularity with global audiences and was this year named the most watched TV show in the US, with audiences taking in more than 35 billion minutes of the show.

In a heartfelt letter to viewers, Brumm confirmed he would be temporarily stepping away from the show in order to give his full attention to bringing the film to life.

“This would have been the case for me with a potential season 4, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series,” he said.

In a statement released by Disney, Brumm also said the success of the longer-format episodes in season 3 made a feature film a natural next step.

“I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together,” he said.

As for the cast, OG fans will be relieved to hear that the show’s Aussie charm will remain, with Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack retaining their roles as Bluey’s mum Chilli and dad Bandit.

The production will also benefit from the expertise of award-winning visual effects producer Amber Naismith (Happy Feat, The Lego Movie). BBC will fund the distribution and licensing of the film, while the Australian government will cover the post-production costs.

Bluey the movie is slated for a 2027 release date, and will air in theatres, on Disney+ and the ABC.
