7 star lashes out at Sam Worthington after ‘Bingle’ bungle

A Channel 7 reporter has penned a fiery response after Sam Worthington appeared to be visibly frustrated by her innocent mistake.

Sam Worthington wasn't happy what this seven reporter called his wife

The Channel 7 reporter that Sam Worthington snapped at after she accidentally referred to his wife by her maiden name, has broken her silence over the actor’s reaction.

Worthington was quick to correct a Channel 7 reporter on-air in Sydney last night when she made the mistake of using the wrong last name for his wife.

Seven News reporter Sally Bowrey was reporting live from the GQ Man of the Year awards at Sydney’s White Bay Power Station, when she introduced the Avatar actor and his wife, “Lara Bingle.”

Worthington – already looking rather unimpressed at the prospect of being interviewed – quickly shot back: “Worthington. Her name’s Lara Worthington. Jeez, it’s only been ten years.”

Following backlash online over Worthington’s frustrated reaction in the moment, Bowrey has penned a poignant response calling the actor out.

“Yes, I made a Bingle bungle, but I am still at a loss to understand why it caused such offence,” she questioned. “I said Lara’s maiden name. Not the wrong name. Just a name she had used for a big part of her life. One that was a household name, long before she met her husband.”

“While it’s a name she no longer uses, it is one that clearly has stuck in the mind of this reporter. More importantly, Lara didn’t seem the least bit bothered by it and laughed it off when I genuinely apologised.”

The reporter questioned the motives behind Worthington seemingly taking such offence to her mistake, one for which she immediately apologised.

She poignantly added: “So why then at an event celebrating what it now means to be a modern man didn’t her husband? A married woman’s identity is far more than her husband’s surname.”

Before becoming Lara Worthington, the former model was better known by her maiden name and was even the subject of a short-lived reality show called Being Lara Bingle.

The couple wed in 2014 and have three children together.

“We tend to try to keep our lives as normal as we can. I don’t think about that stuff ever. I don’t make it my reality,” she told Marie Claire last year of the tabloid culture she’s experienced for more than 20 years.

“My mum instilled in me that it’s important to maintain a little bit of mystery. I think it’s hard in this day and age to achieve. I’ve tried to keep things pretty close to my chest and I think there’s a certain elegance to that.”
