Morgan Evans, Kelsea Ballerini divorce saga just got messier with a docuseries

More details have emerged about the impact of Aussie country music star Morgan Evans’ bitter divorce from Kelsea Ballerini which made global headlines.

Country music stars don’t do amicable divorces – it gets messy in Nashville as Australian singer songwriter Morgan Evans and his former wife Kelsea Ballerini continue to make “art” out of their marriage breakdown.

The latest salvo in the pair’s very public war of words came from Evans on Thursday who released a five-part YouTube docuseries about his song Over For You, written shortly after they announced their split in August last year.

The Day Drunk award-winning country singer made the series when he was back in Australia in September for the first time in three years.

Over For You went viral after he performed it at the annual CMC Rocks festival in Queensland.

In the third episode of the short docuseries, Evans’ father John said the divorce “destroyed” his son.

“Everything’s blowing up and destroyed in his life. I think he needed to come home and feel like he’s a special person and everyone loves him,” Evans Snr says to the camera.

He says his son’s tour and time at home in Australia was a “reset for him to work out what’s important to him … what he wants, what he values.”

The country artist said he was scared about putting out the vulnerable song which reveals he felt blindsided when Ballerini announced their split on Instagram just hours after filing for divorce.

“How long have you been waiting to take our pictures down / How long have you been breaking, why am I just finding out? / How many times did you tell me you loved me if it wasn’t true / I’m just wondering, how long has it been over for you?” he sings.

The two young stars met while hosting an Australian country music awards event in 2017 and married nine months later when she was 24 and he was 32.

It is believed the pair’s relationship was an emotional rollercoaster with Ballerini stating she never wanted to get married so young and the couple were divided about having children.

Ballerini was furious when Evans released Over For You and responded with a surprise EP release on Valentine’s Day called Rolling Up The Welcome Mat.

“And now you’re saying that you’re lost / And that’s lost on me,” she sings on Blindsided. “Years of sitting across from me in therapy / I know the truth is hard to hear, but it wasn’t hard to find / Baby, were you blindsided or were you just blind?”

She then doubled down on her anger about Evans’ side of their split story when she joined the Call Her Daddy podcast.

“Who you marry is not who you divorce,” she said on the podcast.

“As he’s putting out a song about being blindsided, he’s taking half the house that he didn’t pay for.”

She added: “I was not perfect, he was not perfect, it was not perfect. And so, there were definitely moments that I look back on where I’m like, ‘Oh, I should’ve done that different,’ or, ‘I could’ve showed up here. I could’ve taken the flight this time.’”

Evans answered those criticisms with an Instagram post.

“It’s really sad for me to see this person, who I spend so much of my life with, and loved with all my heart, saying things that aren’t reality and that leave out what really happened. If this is what she needs to heal, I hope it helps,” he wrote.

No doubt Ballerini will have more to say now the Over For You docuseries has dropped.
