Bluesfest Byron Bay cancellation leaves fans and artists outraged

MUSIC lovers lamenting the loss of mega New Year’s Eve events Taste of Tasmania and Falls Festival can get around a new week-long summer event, featuring some mainland heavy-hitting performers.

Vandemonian has launched its latest project Hobart Summer, an eclectic mix of local and national artists performing at the Regatta Grounds from December 26 to January 2.

DJ and solo artist Hugo Bladel is rapt to join the line-up after missing out on Falls and the Taste.

“I’ve been going to Falls for the last 10 years, and it was an amazing vibe doing a DJ set at the Taste a couple of years ago,” Bladel said.

“It’s just so exciting to have a place to perform again. It’s been pretty tough for musos of late.”

Bladel, who is releasing his debut album Huge on August 20, said he couldn’t be happier to join the star-studded line-up.

The New Year’s Eve celebration will feature The Presets with Vera Blue, Chase City, The Outfit, Hugo Bladel and Uncle Gus.

One half of the Presets duo Julian Hamilton encouraged Tasmanians to come along and “kick 2021 where it hurts”.

“We’re psyched to be ringing in the new year with all our Tassie mates down on the Hobart foreshore,” he said.

Bladel said local artists Chase City and Uncle Gus would also “get the party started” on NYE.

“I’m raring to go, I’m going to be joined by the effervescent Gus Leighton on the doof saxophone,” Bladel said.

“He’s going to be honking that thing like it’s no one’s business.

“I really like Chase City, their new direction with electronic music and drum and bass has turned them into a contender to be one of the biggest party-starting bands in Hobart.”

The NYE celebration will run from 7pm to 12.30am as an 18+ event, with more all-ages program details announced soon.

Tickets for the NYE event go on presale on Tuesday and general sale on Wednesday at hobartsummer.com.au
