GET ready to belt out your favourite hits at the top of your lungs if a new inner-city karaoke bar is approved by the council.
International students Baiwen Su, Yizhou Wang and Yinghuan Liu all have been studying accounting at UTAS and, while they love the city, they found it was lacking in one area.
“We had this karaoke bar plan in Adelaide,” he said.
“Then we moved to Tasmania and found there was only bars around here and no dedicated karaoke.”
The development application for their G9 Bar & Karaoke before Hobart City Council is for a 330sq m basement bar at Soundys Lane between Elizabeth St and Wellington Court.
The trio said the karaoke bar would have a bar room and six private rooms varying in size.
Mr Su said they were originally going to build the bar in Sandy Bay near the UTAS campus.
“We saw this location and thought it would be better to be in the inner city,” he said.
The proposed operating hours are noon to 3am Monday to Friday and extended to 5am at the weekend.
Mr Liu said they were sorting out building permits and renovations but hoped to be open by Christmas.
