The festival kicked off on Thursday with Dark+Dangerous Thoughts, which ends tomorrow at the Odeon Theatre. Other highlights this week include Mine, a new exhibition by New Zealand artist Simon Denny at MONA revolving around mining, data collection and augmented reality; and Melbourne-based artist Paul Yore’s show It’s All Wrong But It’s Alright (“a temple to worship icons of love, sex and excess”) at Black Temple Gallery in Hobart. Annual favourites include the Winter Feast, from June 14-16 and June 19-23, the ogoh-ogoh parade and burning, and the Nude Solstice Swim (June 22). New offering Dark Path, a 4km art trail on the Queens Domain, runs from June 14-16 and June 19-23. darkmofo.net.au
LADIES IN BLACK
Playhouse Theatre
This heartwarming musical adaptation of Madeleine St John’s popular 1993 novel, The Women in Black, is directed by Tasmania’s Karen Kluss. With its irreverent humour and charm, Ladies in Black is a magical, modern-day fairytale which promises to have you singing long after you leave the theatre. Join ABC Hobart presenter Helen Shield as she leads a panel discussion exploring the work of Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Julie Gough and her new TMAG exhibition Tense Past as part of Dark Mofo. Panellists include Trawlwoolway artist, curator and writer, Julie Gough; Senior Curator of Art at TMAG, Dr Mary Knights; Senior Curator Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, National Gallery of Australia, Ms Franchesca Cubillo; and Research Director at Macquarie University in Sydney, Professor Joseph Pugliese.
