MONA Foma might be heading to Launceston next month, but a music marathon launched at Mona will ensure Hobart doesn’t miss out on all of the fun.
The 42-day Mona Music Marathon began on Thursday and free performances will be held inside Mona and on the lawns every day until January 31.
Mona music curator Brian Ritchie said the line-up would be weird and wonderful.
“We’ll have mostly local artists, this is a great platform for them [and the marathon will include] all different styles of music,” Ritchie said.
“We’re dedicated to the concept of bringing music to the general public that they would not necessarily seek out themselves.
“We want to let the people know that we’re not leaving them behind, there’s still going to be music every day during the summer at Mona.”
Helen Todd will be performing with her improvisation group Mirage on January 6 as part of the marathon.
“We improvise without voices, we don’t organise anything ahead of time — maybe a few cues, that’s it,” Todd said. “The critical issue, really, is listening.”
All Music Marathon events are free and no bookings are required. Artist details and performance times can be found at mona.net.au
