A GENDER-blurring Bosnian singing sensation and a high-energy acrobatics performance are among the first acts announced for next year’s statewide Ten Days on the Island festival.

The first six performances for the biennial festival, to be held across Tasmania in March next year, are being announced today.

Ten Days on the Island artistic director Lindy Hume said the six projects “give a sense of the ambition and scale of what we want to do”.

Bozo Vreco will bring his raw emotion and soaring vocals to Mona, in what will be his first Australian show.

“He’s very extraordinary in the sense that he’s genderless, he wears amazing dresses and he’s got this fantastic beard and miles of tattoos,” Ms Hume said.

Out of Chaos will see high-energy acrobatics performed at Burnie, while Opera in the Vineyard promises an enchanting afternoon at Clover Hill Wines in the state’s North-East.

Peter and the Wolf is a kid-friendly show set for Launceston and Scottsdale, Compassion will be a profound musical performance of love and hope in Hobart, and a Breathtaking show will see two global baroque virtuosi performing in Hobart and at Triabunna.

The full program is due to be released on January 31.

For the first time, the festival will be spread across three weekends, instead of running across 10 consecutive days.

“We’re kind of creating three mini festivals over the 10 days over three weekends, which is a completely different prospect,” Ms Hume said.

“It means that what we do is we can look at those communities and say ‘OK, what is the vibe of the festival for the North-West, then what is it for the North-East, and then what do we want to do in the South. For the audience members, that means that they can use their weekends to go up to the North-West and experience, and perhaps the next weekend go across to the North-East and then come down to the South.

“Wherever you are, you get a completely different festival experience.”

Ten Days on the Island will be held in Tasmania’s North-West from March 8-11, in the North-East from March 15-17, and in the South from March 22-24 next year. For more information and to book tickets, visit tendays.org.au.
