THE Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra continued its mission to take classical music to the masses yesterday, hosting a free “pop-up” recital by German pianist Bernd Glemser.
Renowned for his technical skills and showmanship, Glemser has been a hit the world over since winning the People’s Choice Award at the 1985 Sydney International Piano Competition.
As a prelude to Glemser’s performance in Hobart to-night, he played a short pop-up recital at The Friends’ School at North Hobart yesterday afternoon, giving music lovers of all ages the chance to see him in action and then pick his brain in a Q&A session.
It was the second pop-up recital by a TSO guest in recent months, after German cellist Alban Gerhardt thrilled shoppers at Northgate Shopping Centre in August.
Tonight, Glemser will play Arne, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Chopin, when he joins the TSO for the Piano Masterpieces at the Federation Concert Hall from 7.30pm.
Tickets are $55, $42 concession, $18 students. Go to www.tso.com.au or phone 1800 001 190 for bookings.
