EWAN Favretto had to make sure he wasn’t still dreaming when he received an unexpected and exciting phone call on the weekend.
The 18-year-old from Glebe was the first Tasmanian winner of the Cash Crab competition, taking out the $15,000 jackpot.
The University of Tasmania student got the fortune-changing call on Sunday morning, right after waking up.
“It was quite surreal and I thought it might have been a scam or that I was still dreaming,” he said.
“I had completely forgotten I entered the day before, but once I realised that it wasn’t actually a scam I was over the moon.
“To calm myself down I listened to some psychedelic trance music and had a dance.”

Having had some time to let the news sink in, Mr Favretto planned to splash out a little, but also spend some of the prize money wisely for his future.
“With the money I hope to create a diversified ASX portfolio, but I would also like to buy some shares in [timber company] KDT — I may also buy myself a nice car,” he said.
