After becoming engaged to musician and bandmate Matthew Copley in September 2023,
Delta Goodrem tussled over the decision to reveal the happy news to the world.
Now, in a new interview with Stellar, Goodrem explains why she is protective of their privacy – and how she felt announcing their marriage plans publicly.
“When we got engaged, it was the day before we went on stage [for the opening night of
the 2023 Innocent Eyes Anniversary tour] that we shared the photo [on Instagram],” Goodrem told the Stellar podcast, Something To Talk About.
“And during that tour, it was beautiful – because it felt like we’d done an engagement party in every single city.”

“We got to share that in our own way … on stage together.
“It’s a love language for us being up there, but I do love keeping us as a sacred house, too. That’s important for me.
“He chooses music as well, but he doesn’t choose this. My brother doesn’t. My mum and dad don’t. I have learnt that over time, and that’s what works for me.”
This year, Goodrem is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her chart-topping second album Mistaken Identity, which was released in 2004, a day after she turned 20.
“I don’t remember ever being a teenager in that time. I think I always felt a little bit older than what I was,” she told Stellar.
“My first arena show was 20,000 people. I remember shaking like a leaf. That was my first live show.”

That time was also a pressure-filled, intense chapter of her life as the singer was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and underwent treatment.
“We had just broken in the UK. Elton John called me on the first day of my chemo,” she reflected on Something To Talk About.
“Then I was back out in the world as a teenager, trying to navigate.
“You go from the long haired, no-shoed piano playing [girl] to, all of a sudden, a totally different identity, which is where that title came from.
“And you’re questioning everything. There was a lot of pressure. I think I cried a lot during that chapter. I was doing the best I could, but it was an intense time.”
Goodrem also laughingly recalled her “bad fashion choices” over the 20 years she’s been
in the public eye.
“I think it was a couple of years ago when I said to a girlfriend, ‘I really didn’t like this outfit I was wearing, and I got papped’,” she said.
“Now I’ve just given up on any pride. Here I am. But I was like, oh, I just disliked the outfit, and [my girlfriend] said, ‘Oh babe, don’t worry. It can’t be anything as bad as what you were wearing in 2004 and 2005.’ And I was like, well, I guess you’re right. So there you go.”
