Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik join Queen Margrethe at New Year event

What will Princess Mary get when she becomes queen?

Princess Mary has made what is likely to be final official outing ahead of being crowned Queen of Denmark.

The Australian-born princess joined her husband, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Queen Margrethe at Christiansborg Castle in Copenhagen at an event to support officers from the Armed Forces and the National Emergency Management Agency.

The couple were welcomed with an honour guard when they arrived at Christiansborg, which is used for official royal events and houses parliament and the prime ministers’s office, and is about a kilometre from the royal residence at the Amalienborg Palace.

Representatives of major national organisations and the royal patronage were also invited to the event is held every year as part of Denmark’s New Year celebrations.

It was also Queen Margrethe’s last public appearance as monarch. The 83-year-old made the journey from Amalienborg in a gold coach pulled by six white horses.

Thousands ignored freezing conditions to watch the historic moment.

Queen Margrethe will step down on January 14 after 52 years on the throne.

Princess Mary wore a chocolate brown velvet top by Jesper Hovring with a billowing beige skirt by Rachel Gilbertau and a pearl choker necklace.

Crown Prince Frederik wore a black military uniform adorned with medals and insignias.

Once Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik become King and Queen on January 14 they will inherit A$60 million fortune, the seventh largest among Europe’s royals.

In her annual New Year televised address on December 31, Queen Margrethe said back surgery at the start of 2023 led to “thoughts about the future” and when to pass on the responsibilities of the crown to her son.

“I have decided that now is the right time,” she said in a decision that shocked Danes.
