Before the Princess of Wales fronted the camera to put rumours to rest on Saturday, there were a tonne of conspiracy theories surrounding her absence from the public eye since undergoing scheduled abdominal surgery back in January.
Everything from rumours that Kate Middleton was in an induced coma following surgery to her having a secret Brazilian butt lift and needing three months to recover were stupidly tossed around the internet.
And there were even silly suggestions the Princess of Wales did a “Gone Girl” and ran away from life in the palace, referring to the Ben Affleck film where his on-screen wife faked her own disappearance.
You’d think now that Kate announced in an emotional video she was MIA because she was diagnosed with cancer and receiving preventive treatment, that conspiracy theorists would back off. But, in fact, the opposite has occurred.
One took to Twitter convinced that Kate’s video was “deepfaked” because they claim her ring goes missing from her hand in some frames.
“This Kate Middleton fiasco is insane,” the critic tweeted. “shes definitely f***ing dead, her ring f***ing DISAPPEARS this video is literally deepfaked.”
While many Twitter users labelled the claim as “wrong”, other users bought into the theory.
“Its sooo damning,” claimed one, while another commented, “It’s very odd I must say.”
“Daaaaaamn ok I wasn’t on board before but now,” yet another remarked, with another adding, “AI video. they are waiting couple of weeks or months to announce that she passed away.”
For all the naysayers there were also users who thought the theory was “disrespectful and unnecessary”.
“Stop. Please stop this. Have some empathy for what she and her family are going through,” wrote one, while another pointed out that the ring is “still there just blurry as she moves her hands”.
Twitter has since placed its own disclaimer on the footage, flatly explainings that the discrepancy is just down to a “motion blur”.
“It’s motion blur. Kate was quickly moving her hand and the ring was reflecting the light, therefore appearing blurred. The ring is still there,” the message read along with a link of the video slowed down with the ring clearly visible.
Kate’s cancer announcement video was shared on Instagram on Saturday and has since clocked up close to 5 million views.
