Four years after losing Bert Newton, his widow Patti has addressed claims about her love life after new photos emerged.
Patti Newton has laughed off claims she has a “new man” in her life.
The 80-year-old widow of legendary entertainer Bert Newton has addressed claims she has found love again four years after the death of her beloved husband.
In an Instagram post, Patti rubbished reports she is dating again after a tabloid ran photos of her and a male friend embracing while shopping in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell earlier this month.
As it turns out, the man is a longtime acquaintance Patti ran into while she was out shopping with her daughter, Lauren, 46.
“I have to laugh at these photos that popped up on social media,” Patti began in her caption as she shared pics of her supposed new boyfriend. “I bumped into a man that has been serving me for years at David Jones and we said a quick hello. He is apparently my new man!”
“There will only ever be Bert for me so they can say what they want!”
Last month marked four years since Bert died aged 83 following a long health battle – and Patti remembered the sad day by sharing a touching family photo shared on Instagram.
“Four years today we said goodbye. Miss you everyday,” she wrote alongside a throwback photo on the couple with their two children: Lauren and Matthew, now 48.
Patti shared another touching post earlier this month on November 9, which would’ve been the couple’s 51st wedding anniversary.
“What A Day!! 1974 Ten thousand people watched Bert and I get married at Saint Dominic’s [in Camberwell],” she wrote as she shared a video of the occasion. “The start of a beautiful life with the love of my life. Wonderful memories so lucky to have had him.”
She added: “We loved the crowd coming to see us, a day I’ll never forget. Miss you everyday Alb xxxxx.”
Patti first met Bert on a radio talent show when he was just 12 – three years later, in 1952, he would go on to become Australia’s youngest professional broadcaster at age 15. The pair then started dating until 1968 and were married in 1974.
In a 2023 interview with 2DAY FM’s now-cancelled Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show, Patti opened up about life after losing her husband, confessing that the loss is “getting worse” with time. She also said she is not open to finding love.
“Never. When you have the best, why would you want second best?” Patti, 78, told hosts Dave Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan.
“He was it for me. I fell in love at a very young age and I’ve never looked at anyone else. I’ve never even kissed anyone else.”
When asked by Hughes what Bert would think if she dated again, Patti said he would not be very happy.
“I reckon there would be a huge clap of thunder and probably a strike of lightning. If he could hit me, it would hit,” she joked.
“He used to say to me, ‘You think you’d ever marry again? Yeah, you would, wouldn’t you?’ And I would say, ‘No, I wouldn’t.’ And he said, ‘I’ll keep my eye on you.’”
