Jonathan Majors, the Creed III actor who was arrested in New York after allegedly choking his girlfriend during a domestic dispute, is “completely innocent” and actually the victim, his lawyer claimed.
“We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the district attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently,” Priya Chaudhry, Majors’ criminal defence lawyer, said in a statement, reported the New York Post.
“This evidence includes video footage from the vehicle where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations,” Chaudhry’s statement continued, adding that Majors’ girlfriend was having an “emotional crisis” for which she was hospitalised.
The US Army has already pulled a series of recruitment ads featuring Majors after news of his arrest.
“The US Army is aware of the arrest of Jonathan Majors and we are deeply concerned by the allegations surrounding his arrest. We recently released two ads in which Mr. Majors appears. While Mr. Majors is innocent until proven guilty, prudence dictates that we pull our ads until the investigation into these allegations is complete.”
Police arrested the 33-year-old Marvel star at about 11:15am on Saturday, local time, in a Manhattan apartment near West 22nd Street and 8th Avenue after officers responded to an emergency call.
Cops determined Majors had been in a domestic dispute with an unnamed 30-year-old woman who sources say was his girlfriend.
The girlfriend, who told authorities she’d been assaulted, had minor injuries to her head and neck.
Police took her to the hospital and arrested Majors without incident.
Majors was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court later Saturday on six counts of third-degree assault, three counts of third-degree attempted assault and two counts of harassment.
A judge released Majors on his own recognisance and told him to come back to court on May 8.
TMZ said the Emmy-nominated actor got into an argument with his girlfriend during the taxi ride home from a Brooklyn bar. She confronted him when she found another woman texting him, sources told the outlet.
He got upset, then allegedly grabbed her hand and slapped her, TMZ said.
The woman also claims Majors put his hands around her neck, according to TMZ. They spent the night apart before she called police in the morning.
Majors is currently in two significant releases, Creed III and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He was slated to appear as the main villain, Kang the Conqueror, in a raft of Marvel projects over the next few years and has already completed filming on the second season of Loki.
He had previously appeared in HBO series Lovecraft Country, Spike Lee film Da 5 Bloods and the acclaimed indie, The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
