Joel Creasey has opened up about his most mortifying encounter with a heckler.
The popular performer told news.com.au it happened years ago when he was just starting out in comedy.
“When I was very young, I was doing stand up in Perth and I was like 16 or 17,” he said. “My parents used to have to sign me into venues.”
During one performance, Creasey said, “I remember hearing a bit of a commotion at the back of the room and (saw) someone being removed from the venue.”
He paused his show temporarily and asked for the house lights to be turned on so he could see what was happening.
“It was my dear mother, who’d had a few dry white wines, being gently removed from the venue,” Creasey laughed. “I was like, ‘turn the lights back down, turn the lights back down!’”
Creasey is hoping to have a heckle-free experience as he tours his new show, Thanks For Being Here, around the country in the next few months.
He’s set to perform in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane between now and May.
“This is my 15th stand-up tour, which is wild given I’m only 22 years old,” he joked.
Creasey says the show contains about six or seven ‘dinner party’ stories that he’s collected during his career, and there’s one in particular that he’s promised will shock.
“It’s a very niche pop culture moment that took place in Melbourne maybe 12 years ago. A bunch of celebrities, and I certainly wasn’t anybody at the time, ended a night at [now-defunct strip club] Spearmint Rhino.”
According to Creasey, there was an incident on the night in question which made headlines around the country.
“I don’t think people realise that I was there that night and I saw everything that went down. In my stand-up show, I am naming, shaming and telling people everything!” he said.
Creasey also spoke to news.com.au about his upcoming wedding to his partner of seven years, actor and model Jack Stratton-Smith.
The pair got engaged last year in Italy while visiting Dannii Minogue, and are now in the early stages of planning their big day.
Creasey has many famous friends, including singers like Minogue and his Nova radio offsider, Ricki-Lee Coulter, but there’s one music superstar in particular he’s hoping will perform during the ceremony.
“I have a little savings account that I’ve been putting money into for years, purely to afford Cyndi Lauper to sing me down the aisle to Time After Time, because Strictly Ballroom is my favourite movie and that is one of my favourite scenes ever,” he said.
It’s rumoured Lauper charges more than $300,000 for private gigs.
“I’m probably not going to get her, let’s be honest,” Creasey laughed.
Thanks For Being Here is on now at the Adelaide Fringe. Creasey will then head to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival before shows in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.
