There’s a dating trend that only happens to famous Aussies and these photos reveal why we can’t forget about it.

One of the best things in the world is when a famous Aussie dates an American star and it is massive news for us, but no one in the rest of the world knows who they are.

There’s a trend sweeping the internet where people are sharing the former celebrity couples you forgot dated. The kind that makes you go, “What, they dated? Oh, yeah, they did,” and there are always a few that immediately come to mind.

There’s comedian Chelsea Handler dating rapper 50 Cent in 2010, Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock dating Ryan Gosling in 2011 and actor Cameron Diaz dating rocker Jared Leto in the very early 2000s. Actually, it’s even more random she ended up marrying Benji Madden.

Whenever an Aussie celebrity starts dating an international star it is always a bit funny. Yes, Delta’s a huge deal here and we couldn’t possibly put on Carols by Candlelight without asking her to perform every year, but she’s not exactly a bona fide star in America.

So when she started dating Jonas Brother, Nick Jonas, in 2011 people didn’t understand she was a big deal.

People forget, but when Delta was caught pashing Nick Jonas, she’d recently broken up with Brian McFadden and was very much in her single gal era.

Nick was her rebound; he was 18, and she was 26, and it was all a bit scandalous and exciting.

In Australia, this was big news, our golden girl was moving on, and with a Disney star, now that was an unexpected twist.

To the rest of the world? They just acted like she was a gorgeous blonde that had caught Nick’s eye and not a national treasure; they didn’t understand the power of the ballad Innocent Eyes, nor were they here for the era where she couldn’t find McFadden at the airport in their iconic banger Almost Here.

Internationally, people failed to grasp that Delta, who played Nina Tucker from Neighbours, was the real star in the relationship.

Sure, Nick had sung about Burning Up, but this woman had brought out Lost Without You. A song that, if you’re going through a break-up and you’re Aussie, you are practically required to do a terrifyingly vulnerable karaoke version of that brings down the whole night’s mood down.

The relationship only lasted around nine months before the whole thing collapsed, but it was an iconic era.

There was a wild time when actor Kick Curry, who weirdly seems to be a mates with Sean Penn now, was dating American actor Christina Ricci.

Christina is most famous for playing Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family movies, and the pair dated for over a year in 2007.

To the rest of the world, she was dating some random Aussie actor, but to us she was dating Jacob from Looking for Albrandi.

The wider world was failing to understand she was dating a cultural icon, and they were missing out.

This brings me to the Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus love story we’ve all forgotten.

Yes, Miley married Liam Hemsworth, but it barely counts because he already had mainstream success in America.

Cody was a different kettle of fish; yes, he was making a name for himself in America, but he wasn’t at Hemsworth’s level.

To the rest of the world, Miley Cyrus was the superstar, and he was just a hot guy from Down Under, but they don’t understand how Cody’s banger iYiYi, which was released in 2010, was the soundtrack to everyone’s school discos at the time.

He wasn’t just a random Aussie, he was the guy that crooned about missing someone every second of the day, I mean, now that is romance.

When they were together they used to send the internet into meltdown with their PDA photos but it didn’t last.

The pair dated in 2019 and Simpson confirmed their split in the most Aussie way possible by venturing on to The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

Simpson called it a “mutual decision” and said their lives were going in different directions because he’d started to take swimming seriously.

“I had just started training at the point, so my life was changing a lot, and eventually, I knew that I had to move back to Australia to do it properly. She was going with her whole new album and going on tour and stuff, so it was a kind of fork in the road kind of scenario, really,” he explained.

The rest of the world may have moved on but these are the relationships that will define pop culture in Australia forever.
