Rebecca Gibney has opened up about the secret behind her nearly 25-year marriage, in an industry known for high-profile divorces.

The New Zealand-born star of Australian screens – who exclusively revealed she is joining Dancing With The Stars on a new episode of the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About – has been married to production designer Richard Bell for more than two decades. In the revealing interview, Gibney said she and Bell are “best friends” and “don’t like the little sh*t get in the way of the big stuff”.

“He much prefers to be in the background. We are best friends. And … [that] doesn’t mean that there isn’t romance,” the 60-year-old told Something To Talk About.

“But for me, this is the guy that will be there until the very end. He loves me with my wrinkles. He loves me when I’m fat. He loves me when I’m fit. He doesn’t care. He just gets me.”

Speaking to Something To Talk About, Gibney added: “We love the same everything, doesn’t mean we always get on, we do argue, we compromise. But it’s like, don’t let the little shit get in the way of the big, important stuff. “And we’ve also gone through loss together”.

“He is there for me in every circumstance as I am for him. And he’s my number one priority – he and my son.”

Gibney’s comments came amid a string of high-profile separations for celebrity couples – including that of her close friend, Deborra-Lee Furness and Hugh Jackman, played out in the public eye.

Gibney says she and Bell recently moved to the country where she feels “safe and protected”. “We could sit there and not talk, but he would just be quite happy to sit under the tree with me.

“We don’t chase anything else. I’m very content. We’re both very content. Getting to 60, getting to an age where I’m heading into the final act and I couldn’t think of anyone else that I’d rather walk through the fire with than him.”

Meantime, Gibney told Something To Talk About that she is pushing herself out of her comfort zone by joining Dancing With The Stars.

“I have been asked a few times, and I’ve never been able to do it. And I’ve always gone, ‘But I wouldn’t anyway, because it’s too hard and it’s not my field,” she said on the Stellar podcast, Something To Talk About.

“Then I found myself saying yes because the voice in my head said yes, even though the rest of me was going no.

“And I realised afterwards that – particularly turning 60, it’s apparently the third act – I want to say yes more than no. I want to do things that frighten and challenge me.”

She described DWTS – to screen on Seven later this year – as “probably harder than anything else I’ve done before. I’m so far out of my comfort zone. I’m moving my body in ways that I never thought I could. And my body is resisting, trust me”.
