An Aussie traveller got a massive surprise when she realised she was seated next to a massive Netflix star on a flight to Sydney over the weekend.

TikToker @strydomphotos was left speechless when she was en route to the Laneway Festival, only to discover one of its headliners was sitting right beside her on-board.

In a video shared on the platform, the TikToker revealed Stranger Things star Joe Keery was her seat buddy, with the actor pushing down his sunglasses to unveil his identity for her followers in the clip.

Keery – who plays the beloved Steve Harrington on the Netflix series since it premiered in 2016 – moonlights as the solo musical act Djo (pronounced Joe).

The American star, 32, was headed to Sydney to play his synth-pop sounds to the thousands of fans at the music festival alongside headliners Charli XCX, Clairo, Beabadoobee, Remi Wolf and many more.

The comments went off after the video was posted, with many asking for more details.

“OMG STORY TIME!?” one follower asked, while another begged, “U honestly need to tell us EVERYTHING.”

The TikToker nonchalantly wrote that was “just chilling on a plane” and there was “nothing really to say, just going to Sydney”.

“HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? I’m like surely famous people be flying in first?!? Not with the rest of us hahaha,” one commented, while another wrote, “I would have DIED.”

“I would be sweating the whole ride,” another added as one commented, “It’s probably good I wasn’t in your shoes. wouldn’t be cool and would have 0 chill.”

Keery played the festival at Sydney’s Centennial Park on Sunday in front of 45,000 revellers, with the crowd going wild when he performed his hit track End of Beginning – a snippet of which is now a viral TikTok sound.

Keery became a solo artist in 2019, three years after first appearing on Stranger Things – he was originally with the band Post Animal in the five years prior.

The actor is the first to admit that many of his fans mainly follow his music because he stars in the Netflix hit.

But he has more than proven his chops in the industry with the star set to release his fourth album, The Crux, this April.

“I was pretty insecure about it,” he told Bustle in February 2024 of his fanbase. “You want people to listen to the music and have an open mind.”

“But it’s not lost on me that the majority of people are coming because they know of my work on the show and they’re interested to see what it’s all about.”
