MARVEL may have written Chris Hemsworth out of a job, after the comic book publisher revealed the popular Thor character is changing genders.
The publisher announced on Tuesday that the hammer-wielding God of Thunder — played by Hemsworth in movies — would be a woman in the comics for the first time in the character’s 52-year history..
“No longer is the classic Thunder God able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, and a brand new female hero will emerge worthy of the name THOR,” Marvel said in a statement.
Marvel editor Wil Moss said the female Thor, set to be introduced in October, would be a lasting character.
“The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more,” he said. “And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute — she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”
Jason Aaron, who writes the comics, added: “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
