IT SEEMS Australia can take a small amount of credit for Jessica Alba’s billion-dollar business.

The Hollywood star founded The Honest Company, which focuses on non-toxic and ethical products, in 2011, but she tells Vogue Australia the idea started forming years ago in the land down under.

“I did a TV show in Australia for two years, and that’s where I learned about homoeopathy and homoeopathic medicine,” Alba said, referring to her time filming The New Adventures of Flipper and living in Byron Bay as a 14 year old.

“I was actually vegetarian when I lived in Australia and I learned about veggie pies, because everyone had meat pies. So I found out how to make lentils and tofu veggie pies.”

Asked whether Australia can take responsibility for her successful eco-friendly enterprise, Alba agreed.

“Yeah, totally, actually,” she told the magazine. “And also there are so many natural products and natural things like tea tree oil and all this tea tree-based stuff that came out of Australia, so I would bring that home with me. I learned a lot.”

While some Hollywood stars seem to whack their name on products without any involvement in the business, that’s not the case for Alba. She works from the company’s office in Santa Monica while also juggling her young family and film career.

The magazine details her day: “She starts with a pre-dawn workout, then she is home in time for breakfast and to see her daughters — Honor, 7, and Haven, 4 — before they head to school. She is at the office by 8.30am when the meetings begin — for products, the new Honest Beauty range, film scripts — and continue on a roughly 45-minute routine throughout the day, often meaning she eats lunch at her desk or mid-meeting, then it’s home to see the girls before bedtime.”

And with a tightly packed schedule, Alba doesn’t have much time to unwind.

“I don’t even have a moment to really look at my emails,” she said. “If I get a workout in, that’s ‘me-time’.”

Vogue Australia February issue is on sale Monday January 18.
