Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer’s hilarious BAFTAs ‘stitch up’

Aussie acting couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer presented a big award at the BAFTAs – or tried to, until it all went very wrong.

Australian celebrity couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer provided one of the most enjoyable moments at the weekend’s TV BAFTA Awards, when they presented the award for Best International series.

Or rather, tried to. The married couple – who are also co-stars of the acclaimed Binge series Colin From Accounts – brought some Aussie humour to the British award show when things went south, in what Dyer later joked had been a “classic stich up.”

“Although we’re here presenting the award for [Best] International, it’s never been more important to support local content. British stories made by British people,” Brammall began.

“Anyway, here’s six times in the last year that you didn’t do that, and you bloody loved it,” Dyer quipped.

It started so well.
It started so well.

The pair then presented the award to the Netflix hit Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Pretty soon, though, it became apparent there was nobody from the show in attendance to accept the award – and left to their own devices on stage, the couple clearly had no idea what they were supposed to do.

“Is there a monster in the house?” asked Brammall. “No? Wheel on a 44-gallon drum, or …?” – an off-colour reference to the real-life serial killer who was the subject of the winning show.

Improvising, Dyer asked Brammall who he’d like to thank for the win.

“I guess it all started in the theatre for me …” he quipped, clutching the award.

“I guess we’ll accept this award on behalf of that team, because it was pretty bloody good, I liked it.”

At that moment, Dyer looked straight ahead at the autocue – and her expression changed as she realised that there were actual instructions in place in case this happened.

“Sh*t, it just said ‘read envelope’,” she announced, looking back down at the winner’s envelope.

“Sorry. So sorry! Shut up, OK: ‘Unfortunately – no sh*t – they’re unable to be here this evening, so we’ll make sure they get this. Because we are tight with them,” she said, as the pair somewhat sheepishly left the stage.

“We’ll probably not see you again,” said Brammall to the audience on their way out.

Maybe not at the BAFTAs, but the Logies are only a couple of months away – Brammall and Dyer for co-hosts! What could possibly go wrong?

“Sorry about the issues we had there with the foreigners,” the show’s hosts joked after the couple had left the stage.

Brammall shared a clip of the pair’s attempt at presenting on his Instagram yesterday, throwing his wife under the bus by captioning it: “Lesson #1: how to open an envelope.”

Dyer defended herself in the comments below, writing: “In my defence, I thought I got all the info from the top of the piece of paper. A TINY sticker at the bottom of the page was a CLASSIC STITCH UP.”

Other Aussie actors flooded the post with supportive comments: “Magic,” said Succession star Sarah Snook. “Brilliant! said Kat Stewart, while Kiwi actress Rebecca Gibney called the clip “fricken hilarious.”
