Eddie Redmayne’s performance at this year’s Tony Awards has left viewers bewildered, with some comparing his delivery as “terrifying, like a “goblin”, and similar to the chilling Pennywise the Clown.

The British actor gave a quirky rendition of Wilkommen from Cabaret in character as The Emcee, the role he’s currently playing in the Broadway revival.

However, not everyone loved Redmayne’s offbeat, bizarre interpretation of the well-known character.

At times, the star – who won the Best Actor Oscar for The Theory of Everything in 2015 – was seen hunching his back and flailing about with strange gestures... and the whole spectacle was roasted online.

“Is it possible to have someone’s Oscar revoked (this is an Eddie Redmayne tweet),” one joked.

“Eddie Redmayne giving us Pennywise the clown Emcee,” another said.

Others commented that he was “scaring” them, and providing their “new sleep paralysis demon.”

“Why is Eddie Redmayne playing the emcee in Cabaret like he’s a goblin?” one person asked, while another wrote simply: “Eddie Redmayne is terrifying.”

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club was nominated in the Best Revival of a Musical category at this year’s Tony Awards, but lost to Merrily We Roll Along, starring Jonathan Gross and Daniel Radcliffe.

Redmayne himself was also nominated for his portrayal of Emcee, but missed out to Groff.

The actor previously won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his starring role in the acclaimed West End revival of the 1930s musical.
