Critics Choice Awards 2024: Sarah Snook, Elizabeth Debicki win; Margot Robbie’s Barbie falls short

Margot Robbie’s Barbie, Sarah Snook and Elizabeth Debicki have added more gongs to their awards season haul.

Best moments from the Golden Globes 2024

Aussie star Margot Robbie went home empty-handed again, but still enjoyed a surprise moment on stage from the Critics Choice Awards.

Host Chelsea Handler went rogue at Tuesday’s ceremony in the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, calling Robbie and Barbie director Greta Gerwig to the stage to make an acceptance speech for the untelevised Best Comedy award.

The rather flummoxed pair took to the stage, and couldn’t stop laughing as they delivered their impromptu speeches.

“Thank you, Chelsea. We love you so much. You know when everyone is like, ‘Oh, this is so unexpected.’ This is actually unexpected. This was not a part of the show,” quipped Robbie, who again donned a Barbie-inspired look: a custom red Balmain column dress referencing 1996’s Radiant Rose Barbie.

She added: “But we are very grateful nonetheless.”

Barbie was up for a record-setting 18 nominations, but it was Oppenheimer which again won the battle of the smash-hit movies. The biopic thriller about father of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer took home eight awards including Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. to Barbie’s six which also included Best Original Screenplay and Best Song – surprisingly for I’m Just Ken over the more highly-fancied “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish.

It doesn’t bode well for Robbie’s chances at next month’s Oscars, with the Critics Choice Awards historically the most accurate predictor of Academy Award nominations.

Meanwhile, Sarah Snook and Elizabeth Debicki added to their Golden Globes success.

Snook beat out stiff competition including Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon for The Morning Show, The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey and Keri Russell for The Diplomat.

She thanked both her onscreen sibling Kieran as well as onscreen husband played by Matthew Macfadyen and her real-life husband Dave Lawson.

“This job was extraordinary and exciting to go into work everyday and play dress up for a living. What a silly thrill that is,” she said, of her final turn as Shiv Roy in drama Succession.

“I just wanted to say thank you to Matthew and Kieran. You are the best because of it. Matthew you are gracious and wonderful and lovely. Thank you for being my fake husband.”

She also gave a shout out to Lawson, saying, “Thanks for being the best husband in a supporting role. You are the joy of my life”.

Debicki took out her second top gong for Best Supporting actor for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown.

“Thank you I truly did not expect this,” she said, accepting her trophy. “This role has been an incredible gift to me it has been an incredible challenge, a terrifying challenge and I will always be grateful for it.

“My only hope for it really, is that I would do this remarkable women, this incredible glorious woman proud by playing her in this show.”
